The national average retail price of white pan bread was 140.1¢, up 1.5¢ per lb from December and up 4.1¢ from January 2010. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in two regions — up 12.2¢ in the West and up 0.5¢ in the South — and fell in one region — down 9.4¢ in the Midwest. For the fourth consecutive month, the BLS did not report an average price for the Northeast.
At 188.4¢ per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 0.4¢ per lb from December, and was up 12.5¢ per lb from January 2010.
The national average price of family flour in January was 47.7¢ per lb, up 3.6¢ from December but down 1.4¢ from January 2010. The increase in the national average family flour price broke a string of four consecutive months of declining prices that had put the price at its lowest level since January 2008.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in January was 120.9¢ per lb, up 1.8¢ from December and up 6.2¢ from January 2010. Chocolate chip cookies were 329.8¢ per lb, down 14.4¢ from December but up 1.8¢ from January 2010.
