Geoff Honey, Grain Trade Australia CEO, died June 10. He was 64 years old.
Honey received a degree from Hawkesbury Agricultural College in Applied Science of Agriculture and a teaching degree from Sydney Teachers College.
In January 1998, Honey served as the team leader and commodity specialist on the World Bank Sheep and Wool project. He managed the interface between the Kyrgystan Minister for Agriculture and the World Bank.
Honey then began offering price risk management advice to grain industry participants as an agricultural risk management service until 2003, when he joined the GTA as company secretary and CEO.
In 2006, Honey became a GTA representative for the International Global Trade Coalition where he lead delegations and participated on committees to facilitate the commercial functions associated with the global grain trade. He continued to be a representative for GTA until his passing.
Honey also held a few positions within the Australian government. He was appointed the chairman of the Grain Export Certification Reform from 2009-11, a member of the Wheat Industry Expert Group in 2008 and a member of the Grains & Plant Products Export Industry Consultative Committee since 2004.
“As CEO of Grain Trade Australia, Geoff took the organization and made it into the peak body representing all the Trade at an industry level,” said Richard Simonaitis, CEO of Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre. “He was widely respected as a person who could effect change. He discharged his duties in servicing his membership in a very effective and efficient manner.”
Honey’s funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. June 21 at the Knox Grammar School Chapel, Borambil St., Warrawee, New South Wales, Australia.
