The Beef NRC, originally published in 1944, serves as a reference to animal nutritionists, professors, and the cattle and feed industries in the development and implementation of nutritional and feeding programs for beef cattle. Since the revision of the seventh edition in 2000, the industry has undergone tremendous change, initiating the need for an eighth edition.
"Since the last Beef NRC edition, the industry requirements have seen quite a bit of change, and many of the recommendations are obsolete," said Richard Sellers, IFEEDER secretary. "The eighth edition offers updated research -- conducted throughout a span of 14years -- and new information, which IFEEDER believes is vital to share with industry."
The publication now includes information on:
• Phosphorus and sulfur contents;
• Review of nutritional and feeding strategies to minimize nutrient losses in manure and
reduce greenhouse gas production;
• Discussion of the effect of feeding on the nutritional quality and food safety of beef;
• New information about nutrient metabolism and utilization;
• New information on feed additives that alter rumen metabolism and postabsorptive
metabolism; and
• Potential research areas for the future.
Asymposiumon the publication will take place July 21, at the2016 joint annual meetingin Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.
