“ADM Cares offers employees the opportunity to volunteer and give back to their communities around the world,” said Eric Lowe, superintendent at ADM Milling in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, U.S. “Our purpose as a company is to serve vital needs for food and energy. World Food Day offers our employees another way to do this, while also increasing awareness of the more than 1 billion people living in chronic hunger around the globe.”
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations celebrates World Food Day each year on Oct. 16, the day on which the organization was founded in 1945. One objective of World Food Day is to strengthen international and national solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty and to draw attention to achievements in food and agricultural development.
Throughout its history ADM has aided in the world’s efforts to reduce hunger. Last year, ADM Cares funded the creation of the ADM Institute for the Prevention of Postharvest Loss at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The goal of the institute is to work with smallholder farmers in the developing world to help preserve millions of metric tons of grains and oilseeds lost each year to pests, disease, mishandling and other factors. Helping farmers preserve more of what they already grow is fundamental to feeding the world, and to making the most of the land, water, energy and other inputs already used to grow crops.
