ATCHISON, KANSAS, U.S. — Sarah Gutkowski has been named baking application scientist at MGP Ingredients, Inc. the Atchison-based company said June 16. She will develop formulations with MGPI’s protein and starches for existing and future customer applications, and she will conduct lab experiments on new ingredients. The position also involves producing lab samples and providing product demonstrations in customers’ food production facilities.
Gutkowski received a master of science degree in grain science and carbohydrate polymers at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, U.S. She worked as a graduate research assistant at the university, conducting analysis tests on starch ingredients. Previously, Gutkowski was a food science intern for MOM Brands in Lakeville, Minnesota, U.S. While there, she formulated ready-to-eat cereals and worked with flavor and ingredient companies to increase the nutritional value of cereal products.
“I look forward to Sarah working alongside our sales and marketing teams to bring new concepts and applications to the marketplace,” said Mike Buttshaw, vice-president of ingredient sales and marketing for MGPI. “Sarah will be an integral part of our expanded go-to-market platform and will quickly have a very positive impact for our customers. She will also support our ongoing focus on developing MGP’s specialty, value-added portfolio of proteins and starches in the bakery segment.”
Gutkowski received a bachelor of science degree in food science from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 2011. While holding a variety of research positions throughout her time as a student, she earned awards through her participation in the Institute of Food Technologists. “My combined interest in chemistry and food formulations inspired me to pursue a career in food science,” she said. “I am passionate about helping create healthier, great-tasting foods that are also high in functionality, which attracted me to this role at MGP.”
