WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — Planted area to corn, soybeans and spring wheat other than durum in 2013 was estimated up from a year ago while durum area was down sharply, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in its June 28 annual Acreage report. The soybean planted area number will be record high if realized.

Area planted to corn was estimated at 97,379,000 acres, up 97,000 acres from March intentions of 97,282,000 acres, up 224,000 acres from 97,155,000 acres in 2012, and the highest on record since 102 million acres in 1936, the USDA said. Corn area for harvest was estimated at 89,135,000 acres, up 1,760,000 acres, or 2%, from 87,375,000 acres a year ago.

The corn planted area was well above the average of trade expectations of 95,340,000 acres. New crop corn futures prices tumbled more than 20¢ a bushel after the release of the report.

Soybean planted area was estimated at 77,728,000 acres, up 602,000 acres, or about 1%, from March intentions of 77,126,000 acres, and up 530,000 acres, or less than 1%, from 77,198,000 acres last year, the USDA said. Area for harvest was estimated at 76,918,000 acres, up 814,000 acres, or 1%, from 76,104,000 acres in 2012.

The soybean planted area was below the average trade pre-report estimate of 78,024,000 acres, but new crop soybean futures prices still declined about 10¢-15¢ a bushel after the report.

Durum seeded area was estimated at 1,538,000 acres, down 213,000 acres or 12%, from March intentions of 1,751,000 acres, and down 585,000 acres, or 28%, from 2,123,000 acres in 2012. Durum area for harvest was estimated at 1,502,000 acres, down 600,000 acres, or 29%, from 2,102,000 acres in 2012.

Area seeded to spring wheat other than durum was estimated at 12,295,000 acres, down 406,000 acres, or 3%, from March intentions of 12,701,000 acres, but up 6,000 acres from 12,289,000 acres in 2012. Area intended for harvest was estimated at 11,958,000 acres, down 97,000 acres, or 1%, from 12,055,000 acres in 2012. Total hard red spring wheat planted area was estimated at 11.7 million acres, the USDA said.

Winter wheat planted area was estimated at 42,697,000 acres, up 1,373,000 acres, or 3%, from 41,324,000 acres a year ago. Harvested area was estimated at 32,270,000 acres, down 439,000 acres, or 1%, from 32,709,000 acres in the June Crop Production report but down 2,564,000 acres, or 7%, from 34,834,000 acres in 2012. Area planted to hard red winter wheat was 29.4 million acres, to soft red winter was 9.96 million acres and to white winter was 3.38 million acres, the USDA said.

All wheat planted area was estimated at 56,530,000 acres, up 90,000 acres from 56,440,000 acres indicated in March and up 794,000 acres, or 1%, from 55,736,000 acres a year ago. Harvest area was estimated at 45,730,000 acres, down 3,261,000 acres, or 7%, from 48,991,000 acres a year ago.

USDA planting estimate for spring wheat and all wheat were above trade expectations but the durum number was below average expectations.

Area planted to grain sorghum was estimated at 7,195,000 acres, up 15% from 6,244,000 acres in 2012, while harvested area was forecast at 6,085,000 acres, up 23% from 4,955,000 acres last year.

Oats planted area was forecast at 3,026,000 acres, up 10% from 2,760,000 acres in 2012 but still the third lowest planted area on record. Harvested area was forecast at 1,196,000 acres, up 14% from 1,045,000 acres in 2012 and also the third lowest on record if realized.

Rice planted area was estimated at 2,470,000 acres, down 8% from 2,699,000 acres in 2012, with harvested area forecast at 2,449,000 acres, down 9% from 2,678,000 acres last year.
