ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS, U.S. — Bimbo Bakeries USA said it will close its Sara Lee Bakery in Rock Island by the end of the year. The company will shut down a bun-producing line on Jan. 17 and phase out bread production later in the year, eliminating about 100 jobs.
According to Bimbo Bakeries, the Rock Island plant is an aging facility and the company has more efficient plants that may handle the baking currently done in Rock Island.
Bimbo Bakeries USA, through its parent company, Grupo Bimbo, acquired Sara Lee Corp.’s North American Fresh Bakery business, including the Rock Island facility, in September 2011.
