PARANAGUÁ, BRAZIL — The Port of Paranaguá experienced an increase of cargo movement in 2016, as 45.1 million tons of cargo was moved during the year, up 2% from 43.9 million tons in the same period of 2015. Port officials said the positive result was due to the movement of general cargo, fertilizers and sugar. The export of Brazilian corn was negatively affected by international market factors.

“The strategic planning of the Port of Paranaguá was directed to meet the user and their needs,” said Jose Richa Filho, secretary of infrastructure and logistics at the Port of Paranaguá. “In 2016, we proved this by moving a varied mix of cargo more efficiently, which met the expectation of the production sector of Paraná.”

Overall, 27.9 million tons were exported from the port, reflecting recent upgrades and investments made in the past couple years. Port officials indicated 7.9 million tons of soybeans, 4.5 million tons of soybean meal and 2.6 million tons of corn were exported from the port in 2016.

The Port of Paranaguá recorded 17.2 million tons of imported cargo, an increase of 21% compared to 2015 imports.
