OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA — For many Canadian crops in 2016-17, the average yield was as at a record or near-record level. However, the extended harvest in Western Canada has a had a negative impact on crop quality in affected regions, and crops left out over the winter may see additional negative impacts, depending on the severity of winter. For all field crops in Canada, production for 2016 is estimated at 91.7 million tonnes, according to the latest supply and demandprojectionsfrom Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s market analysis division, released on Dec. 21.


Canada’s total grain and oilseeds ending stocks for 2016-17 is estimated at 13.5 million tonnes an increase of about 400,000 tonnes compared to the November report estimate.  The grains and oilseeds included in total are wheat, soybean, corn, canola, barley, rye, oats and flaxseed.

Total production for grains and oilseeds is estimated at 82.89 million, an increase of about 735,000 tonnes compared to the November estimate of 82.15 million tonnes, the report said.

Canada’s total grain and oilseeds exports were forecast 41.78 million tonnes, down slightly from the previous month’s estimate of 41.829 million tonnes.

According to the report, total domestic usage is estimated at 41.67 million tonnes in 2016-17, up from 41.31 million tonnes in the November report. Total domestic usage in 2015-16 was forecast at 39.14 million tonnes.
