KYIV, UKRAINE — Ukraine has sent 500 tonnes of flour to Syria as part of the Grain from Ukraine program that will provide food for 33,000 families for a month, Ukrainian National News (UNN) reported.

More than two dozen trucks will deliver this first batch of grain to Syria, where more than half of people are food insecure and millions face severe hunger conditions.

Following talks in Damascus, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said Ukraine is ready to deliver more aid to the nation.

“We are ready to help the Syrian people, because Ukraine is interested in a stable Syria and the development of mutually beneficial cooperation,” Sybiga said. “We promised to support food security and we are fulfilling our promise in a short time.”

The minister emphasized that Ukraine remains a guarantor of food security and helps others even in times of war. Ukraine is among the world's largest exporters of wheat, barley and corn, and is the top shipper of sunflower oil.
