MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY — Louis Dreyfus Co. (LDC) has acquired a grains and oilseeds storage facility in Uruguay after six years of operating the site in Nueva Palmira, department of Colonia. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Situated on 10 hectares, the facility has steel silo storage capacity of 38,000 tonnes with an additional 12,000 tonnes available in silo bags, LDC said. It is designed to receive, condition and store crops such as soybeans, wheat, rapeseed, carinata and, in the near future, camelina.
LDC said the acquisition, announced Dec. 5, consolidates its position in a strategic agricultural area just 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) from Nueva Palmira port on the Uruguay River, Uruguay’s main grains and oilseeds export terminal. Further investments are planned for 2025 to enhance the facility’s technology and optimize operational efficiency.
“We are glad to consolidate our position in Uruguay, a key origination market for LDC, with this acquisition,” said Mario Sampaolesi, head of grains and oilseeds origination for Uruguay at LDC. “The investment reflects our long-term commitment to the country, contributing to Uruguay’s continued development as an important exporter of agricultural goods, and aligns with the group’s strategy to further reinforce its core merchandizing capabilities, based on strong partnerships with local producers.”
LDC said it will continue to support the growth of the country’s agricultural sector by offering logistics, storage and conditioning services, fertilizer delivery and financial solutions from the Nueva Palmira facility and from other assets that the company operates in Uruguay’s main agricultural areas.
In marketing year 2024-25, the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture forecasts Uruguay producing 1.3 million tonnes of wheat, 1 million tonnes of corn and 3.4 million tonnes of soybeans.
