PHILIP, SOUTH DAKOTA, US — The Dakota Mill & Grain, Inc. elevator at Philip, South Dakota, was declared a total loss following a large fire Dec. 4, television station NewsCenter 1 reported.
Led by the Philip Volunteer Fire Department, multiple agencies from a three-county area responded to contain the blaze, which was reported just after 4 a.m.
A safety perimeter was established as the fire threatened residential properties after spreading into a nearby field. Firefighters decided to contain the elevator fire and allow it to burn out while focusing their efforts on protecting surrounding structures.
No injuries have been reported, and emergency officials continued to monitor the situation. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
