RABAT, MOROCCO — Morocco’s wheat and barley production in 2024 dropped 43% due to severe drought, leading the government to subsidize imports, according to a report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture.
Production included 1.77 million tonnes of common wheat, 700,000 tonnes of durum wheat and 650,000 tonnes of barley.
The government supported common wheat imports based on a fixed flat-rate payment.
For market year 2024-25, Morocco has turned to Russia and Ukraine to meet its wheat supply, the FAS said. Imports from Canada and Argentina are down 22% and 100%, respectively, due to prices, the FAS said.
The EU accounted for 80% of the market share in barley imports.
