DHAKA, BANGALDESH — Akij Resource, a diversified industrial conglomerate based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, recently inaugurated a new flour mill under its subsidiary Akij Essentials Ltd., which specializes in food commodities.

Akij Resource said the flour mill located in North Noada, Nabiganj Bandar, Narayanganj, uses state-of the-art machinery and technology provided by Switzerland-based Bühler. With a production capacity of 600 tonnes per day, the mill will produce food products such as atta, maida and suji. The location includes nine silos with a storage capacity of 12,000 tonnes each.

The company said that in keeping with its commitment to innovation and efficiency, the flour mill features fully automated processes from raw material handling to product loading onto trucks. The facility is equipped with advanced laboratories to ensure the wheat’s nutritional quality and safety, utilizing sterilization techniques across three stages and equipment like the Matador impact machine. Near infrared technology continuously monitors gluten to maintain optimal levels.

The July 10 inauguration ceremony featured Sheikh Jasim Uddin, managing director of Akij Resource, who officially opened the mill, and Faria Hossain, chairman of the company.

Wheat flour has diverse uses in Bangladesh at the household level, as well as in restaurants, bakeries, and the food industry, according to the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture.

Due to changing urban dietary patterns in the South Asian country of about 171 million people, there has been an increase in the consumption of wheat flour-based “roti” (flatbread), the FAS said. With a growing middle class, the demand for bakery products has climbed, while expansion in the biscuit-, noodle-, and pasta-making industries is consuming significant amounts of wheat flour.
