DEZHOU, CHINA — A new flour mill capable of processing up to 900,000 tonnes of wheat per year is under construction in China’s Shandong province, China Daily reported.

Beijing, China-based COFCO Group is a major investor in the project, which is expected to be completed in early 2025, the newspaper reported. COFCO told China Daily that the plant will have four production lines and produce up to 650,000 tonnes of flour per year, meeting the staple food needs of 7.5 million people.

It noted that the construction project also includes grain storage silos, a research and development center and a customer service center.

The $193 million project is expected to generate $303 million in annual sales, according to China Daily.

China is the world’s leading producer and consumer of wheat. It is also the world’s leading wheat miller, with more than 2,000 flour mills, including 300 large-scale modern plants, with a total capacity of 240 million tonnes (wheat equivalent) per year.
