HAMBURG, GERMANY – Germany’s wheat and rapeseed plantings for the 2023-24 marketing year have been reduced by 7.3% and 4.7%, respectively, from the previous crop season, Reuters reported, citing Germany’s national statistics agency.

The agency estimates that 2.6 million hectares of wheat and 1.1 million hectares of rapeseed have been planted. Wet weather during the planting season was the primary reason for the reduced sowings by German farmers, it said.

Germany is the European Union’s second largest wheat producer and a major exporter and is also one of the EU’s biggest rapeseed producers. Last year, Germany harvested 22.2 million tonnes of wheat off a planted area of 2.94 million hectares, according to the European Commission.
