CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, US — A fire in the feed house of ADM’s corn processing plant at its complex in Decatur, Illinois, US, was contained and extinguished with help from local firefighters on Aug. 28.
ADM said employees detected the fire about 4 p.m. during maintenance activities. Employees were quickly evacuated, and all were accounted for and safe.
Upon arrival, crews from the Decatur Fire Department found heavy fire and smoke from the industrial structure that contained process tanks, WAND-TV reported. The fire department remained on the property for 12 hours as crews worked to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire and extent of damage were not available.
Two firefighters were taken to a local hospital where one was treated and released and the other was admitted for observation.
“We appreciate the quick response of the Decatur fire department to help us contain and extinguish the fire,” ADM said.
Decatur is home to ADM’s North American headquarters and employs some 4,000 workers locally across its corn and soybean processing and nutrition activities, about 10% of its global workforce.
