COLLINS, MISSISSIPPI, US — A boiler explosion at the Sanderson Farms Collins Feed Mill in Mississippi injured one person on Dec. 13, according to the Collins Fire Department.
The department received the call at 9:36 a.m. that an explosion had taken place in the boiler room area and there was fire and heavy smoke showing.
Treatment was started on the injured person, who was transported by emergency services.
Fire crews were able to capture and valve out the gas main and gain control of the fire. They were able to prevent the fire from going into other areas of the feed mill.
“CFD has a very strong working relationship with the Sanderson Farms facilities and personnel and work very closely with them to be prepared for emergency incidents that might occur at these locations,” the fire department said in a release on its Facebook page. “Today, these relationships worked to prevent further injuries and to safety, quickly and efficiently mitigate the incident.”
The fire department cleared the scene in two hours.
Members of the Sanderson Farms’ safety team is investigating to determine the cause of the explosion. The mill is currently offline, WDAM television reported.
