BREWSTER, MINNESOTA, U.S. — An explosion at one of the grain silos at the New Vision Cooperative elevator in Brewster, Minnesota, U.S., left one person injured, according to The Globe.
According to the newspaper, firefighters responded to a report of a fire shortly before 10 a.m. on June 10. The explosion occurred just after 5:40 p.m. on June 11 as firefighters unloaded an estimated 15,000 bushels of corn.
Lyle Oberloh, Brewster Fire Department 1st Captain, told The Globe that the explosion occurred when the smoldering corn was “hit by a water blast” that pushed it toward grain dust, igniting the blast.
“Basically, the elevator’s probably going to have to call a salvage company,” Oberloh told The Globe. “We won’t be going up there to extinguish it anymore. We’ll put out the smoldering on the outside of the building, and that should be pretty much it.”
John Garmer, Brewster Fire Chief, said the silo contained approximately 20% of its 75,000-bushel capacity at the time of the fire.
